Cinque is a exciting introduction to 5/4 time signatures for
intermediate string ensembles. The melody is fast and features a
catchy tune inspired by the faster renaissance dances, such as the
galliard. The use of modal harmonies in the opening section is also
reflective of the Renaissance period. There is a middle section in D
major which highlights the cello and bass parts with a moving
pizzicato bass line. All parts, except the bass, are in 1st position with
a few optional 3rd position notes in the 1st violin. A spirited piece for
your string ensemble!
