Based on a loose concept of medieval dances, this Aire and Dance is
an accessible piece for intermediate string orchestras. The opening
of the Aire features the violas with delicate accompanying
pizzicatos in the celli and bassi. The Allegro Dance, which
immediately follows, has an energetic 9/8 lilting rhythm. There are
some syncopated rhythms which add some funk style to the piece
and there is also use of col legno and ‘chop’ bowing in the return of
the main theme towards the end. A piece sure to impress both
students and audience alike!
